Best Partial Knee Replacement Surgeon in Ranchi
Only one part worn out?
Replace only that.
Keep the healthy parts of your knee. Unicompartmental replacement treats early, single-side arthritis by resurfacing only the worn compartment — giving a smaller cut, a more natural feel and a faster recovery than a full joint replacement.

Partial knee replacement — quick answers
Only the worn compartment is resurfaced — the healthy cartilage, bone and ligaments are all left in place.
What is it?
Surgery that resurfaces only the one worn-out compartment of the knee, leaving the healthy bone, cartilage and ligaments untouched.
Who is it for?
People with arthritis in just one part of the knee (usually the inner side), with good ligaments and a fairly straight leg.
Recovery time
Often walking within hours. Home in 1–2 days, back to daily life in 2–4 weeks — usually faster than a total knee replacement.
Cost
Approx. ₹1.5–2.5 lakh — far more affordable than metros, with imported implants. Insurance & cashless available.
What is partial knee replacement?
Preserving the ligaments and healthy bone is what makes the joint feel natural afterwards.
Partial knee replacement — also called unicompartmental knee replacement (UKR) — resurfaces only the single damaged part of the knee, instead of the whole joint. The knee has three compartments; when arthritis has worn out just one (most often the inner, or medial, side), only that part is replaced with a small metal-and-plastic implant.
Because the healthy cartilage and, crucially, the natural ligaments (including the ACL) are kept, the knee tends to bend better and feel more like your own than after a total joint replacement. The incision is smaller, there is less blood loss, and most patients are up and walking remarkably quickly.
Partial resurfacing is one of the most rewarding knee surgeries for the right patient — but only for the right patient. It also means patients across Ranchi & Jharkhand can have it done close to home, without travelling to Delhi or Kolkata. Careful selection is everything, which is why Dr. Saurav assesses each knee thoroughly before recommending the procedure rather than a total replacement.
Partial knee is not
for everyone
You may be a good candidate if
- Arthritis is limited to one compartment (usually the inner side)
- Your knee ligaments — especially the ACL — are still intact
- The knee bends well and is only mildly bow-legged or knock-kneed
- Pain is focused on one side of the knee, not all over
- You want the fastest possible recovery and a natural-feeling knee
A total knee may be better if
- Arthritis affects two or three compartments of the knee
- The ACL is torn or the knee is significantly deformed
- You have inflammatory arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis
- The knee is very stiff and cannot straighten fully
Roughly 1 in 4 knee-arthritis patients is suitable for a partial replacement. Dr. Saurav uses X-rays, examination and sometimes an MRI to confirm the arthritis is truly single-compartment before recommending it. If a total knee is the safer long-term choice, he will tell you plainly. Explore Total Knee Replacement →
Types of partial knee replacement
Medial Unicompartmental
Resurfaces the inner (medial) side of the knee — by far the most common type, as most single-compartment arthritis affects this side.
Lateral Unicompartmental
Resurfaces the outer (lateral) side of the knee when arthritis is confined there — less common, and technically demanding.
Patellofemoral Replacement
Resurfaces the joint between the kneecap and thigh bone when arthritis is limited to the front of the knee.
Conversion to Total Knee
If a partial knee ever wears further in future, it can be revised to a total knee replacement — a reassuring long-term option.
How the procedure
works, step by step
Careful selection — X-rays, examination and sometimes MRI confirm the arthritis is truly single-compartment.
Admission and anaesthesia — spinal or general, often with a nerve block for comfort.
Small incision over the affected side of the knee — much smaller than for a total knee.
Only the worn surface removed, preserving healthy cartilage, bone and the ligaments.
Implant fitted — a small metal cap and a smooth plastic spacer resurface just that compartment.
Movement & balance checked during surgery to ensure a smooth, natural glide.
Walking the same day for most patients, thanks to the smaller procedure.
Discharge in 1 to 2 days with a simple physiotherapy and recovery plan.
The procedure typically takes 45 to 60 minutes. Dr. Saurav uses internationally sourced imported implants for the best fit and durability.
Recovery after the surgery
Walking with support within hours. Most patients go home the same or next day.
Walking steadily indoors, wound healing, gentle physiotherapy. Off the walker for many.
Back to most daily activities and light work. Driving returns for many patients.
Walking distance and strength grow. The knee feels increasingly natural.
Full functional recovery for most patients — often quicker than a total knee.
Because less tissue is disturbed, recovery is usually faster and the knee feels more natural. Your exact timeline depends on your knee and fitness.
Preparing for your surgery
Careful preparation and strict safety protocols give the best, safest result.
Before your surgery
Before the procedure, Dr. Saurav’s team runs a full pre-surgical work-up — X-rays, blood tests and a fitness and anaesthesia assessment — to confirm the diagnosis and make sure you are ready. Long-term conditions such as diabetes, blood pressure or heart disease are optimised first, and you are told clearly which medicines (such as blood thinners) to pause and when to stop eating before admission.
On the day, the procedure, your expected hospital stay and the recovery plan are explained again so you and your family know exactly what to expect — with a transparent, itemised cost estimate shared in advance and no hidden charges.
How your safety is protected
The surgery is performed in a dedicated, sterile operating theatre with an experienced anaesthesia team and strict infection-control protocols. Only the worn compartment is resurfaced, sparing your healthy bone and ligaments. Blood-clot (DVT) prevention, careful tissue handling and quality imported implants further reduce risk and protect your result.
Dr. Saurav personally reviews your recovery, and the Medifirst Hospital team stays reachable for any concern after you go home. Serious complications are uncommon — and the honest, careful selection of who truly needs surgery is itself one of the most important safety steps of all.
