What is it?

What is arthroscopy?

Arthroscopy is keyhole surgery for the joints. Through a cut smaller than a fingernail, the surgeon slides in a pencil-thin telescope called an arthroscope, which sends a bright, magnified picture of the inside of the joint onto a screen. Fine instruments passed through one or two more tiny cuts then repair the problem — all without opening the joint.
It is used both to diagnose — confirming exactly what is wrong when scans are unclear — and to treat: reconstructing a torn ACL, repairing a meniscus or rotator cuff, removing loose fragments, smoothing cartilage, releasing a stiff joint or stabilising a dislocating shoulder.
Because the joint is barely disturbed, the keyhole approach means less pain, a lower infection risk, smaller scars and a faster recovery than traditional open surgery. Most procedures are day-care or need only a one-night stay.
